Siena Women's Tennis Wins One of Four at SBU

September 11, 1999

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. -- The Siena women's tennis team posted a 1-3 record over the weekend while playing in the St. Bonaventure Fall Classic, played on campus at St. Bonaventure University.

In Siena's first contest, the Saints were defeated by Cleveland State, 4-3. Local product Nikki Mayer (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) won the first match of the season, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Adrienne Costanzo.

The Saints picked up their first team victory of the season in their afternoon match, defeating Niagara 4-3. Nikki Mayer had another easy victory, defeating Colleen Willick 6-0, 6-1. Siena's Cara Courtore (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), Eileen Gallocher, and Anne Burak (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) each picked up their first wins of the season in singles matches.

On the second day of action, the Saints were defeated by Canisius College, 4-3. Nikki Mayer continued her perfect string on the weekend, defeating Kara Armstrong 6-1, 6-0, for her third win on the weekend. The Saints other victory on the day came in doubles action where Jennifer Fahr (Seaford, N.Y./General Douglas Macarthur) and Colleen Brady (Goffstown, N.H./Trinity) posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

In the final match of the weekend, the Saints were defeated by host St. Bonaventure, 5-2. Nikki Mayer closed out the weekend with her fourth straight win, a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Johanna Pesola. Siena's Eileen Gallocher tallied her second win of the weekend in singles action with a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Tara Pilato.

Overall, Mayer, the first student-athlete to ever receive an athletic scholarship in women's tennis at Siena, posted a perfect 4-0 mark on the weekend in her first four matches of collegiate action.
