Saints Bow to Marist 5-3

April 10, 2001

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Siena women's tennis team fell flat after its upset victory over Fairfield, losing 5-3 to Marist College at the New York Valley Club.

The Saints won first doubles 8-3 and both top singles matches behind the outstanding play of Nikki Mayer (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and Andrea Disponzio (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale). Mayer marched through Marist's first singles with a 6-0, 6-1 straight set victory. Disponzio posted a 6-1, 6-3 win after falling behind 2-0 to start the second set.

In fourth singles, sophomore Victoria Dunham (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart) lost a close hard-fought match to the Red Foxes' Kate Szymonski 6-4, 7-5. Also playing well in defeat was Eileen Gallocher (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) in fifth singles. Gallocher dropped the set 7-5, and was tied at four in the second set before the match was called due to darkness.

The Saints will next be in action at home against Binghamton on April 12 at 3:00 p.m.
