Siena Tops Rider 4-3 in Women's Tennis Action
Sept. 23, 2001
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Junior standout Nicole Mayer (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) earned an easy victory in top singles and Brooke Fisher (Kantonah, N.Y./John Jay) picked up a huge come-from-behind triumph playing number five as the Saints claimed a 4-3 victory over Rider University in Lawrenceville Sunday afternoon. Mayer's victory over the Broncs' Kristen Zigo was her second of the season and improved the sophomore's career record to 25-8. The win improved the Saints early season record to 2-0. The most dramatic singles match of the day was Fisher's come-from-behind win over Amanda Smith. Trailing 5-2 in the decisive third set, Fisher rallied to take the match with a 7-5 victory. That win coupled with Mayer's and a straight-set victory at fourth singles by Anita Pudusseri earned the Green and Gold a split in singles play. Doubles victories by the pairings of Mayer and Andrea Disponzeo, and Betsy Brookins and Fisher clinched the win. Brookins and Fisher erased a 3-5 deficit in their match to pull out the victory.
