Several Saints Shine in Third Annual Siena Invite

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Senior Sarah Mayer and freshman Jasleen Sandhu had the unusual opportunity to first play , and then against, each other for a chance at top honors in the Third Annual Siena Invitational which concluded Sunday in Schenectady's Central Park. Mayer and Sandhu, who both attended Latham's Shaker High School, teamed together for an 8-5 win over Ayushi Sinha and Ashley Rissolo of Providence in the finals of the A-Flight Doubles draw and Mayer then topped Sandhu 6-2 and 6-0 in the A-Flight singles finals. "I want to thank the city of Schenectady, and in particular Steve Ettkin for his hard work and vision in making this weekend's Tournament a reality," Siena head coach Tim O'Brien said. "The events and grounds staff also did a tremendous job working with all our requests to help run this a first class event. We hope we have the opportunity to come back for years to come." Mayer played tremendous tennis on Sunday, winning all three of her matches on the famed Stadium Court. She began the day with a quick 6-1 and 6-0 win over Rissolo in the A-Flight semifinals. Her freshman teammate advanced to the finals with an impressive 6-1 and 6-1 triumph over Sinha, the Friars #1 singles player. Mayer and Sandhu then rallied past Rissolo and Sinha 8-5 in the doubles' finals before an appreciative crowd on the Stadium Court. The Stadium Court action concluded with Mayer coasting to victory in the A-Flight Finals. Outside Stadium Court, the action was fast and furious. Siena's Danielle Crill defeated Hartford's Maggie Sabatino 6-1 and 6-4 in the B-Flight finals. Carolyn Chadalay of Holy Cross won the C-Flight with a competitive 6-4 and 6-4 win over Siena's Jes Asselin and the Crusaders' Kathryn Wilkin won the D-Flight over Proviednce's Ally Wegner 6-2 and 6-2.
"All four teams displayed tremendous sportsmanship all weekend," O'Brien said. "We had a competitive field and some terrific matches." Asselin teamed with Nicole Ross to post an 8-3 win in the B-Flight doubles finals over Melaine Albert and Amy McDevitt of Providence.
