Mayer and Sandhu Lead Way at Siena Invite
Sept. 20, 2008
Shaker grads Sarah Mayer and Jasleen Sandhu each posted easy wins in their first round singles' matches Saturday on the opening day of play in the third annual Siena College Women's Tennis Invitational at Central Park in Schenectady. Mayer and Sandhu also teamed to win two doubles competitions, advancing to tomorrow's finals where they will meet Ashley Rissolo and Ayushi Sinha of Providence College. The Saints received strong contributions up and down their roster. Danielle Crill defeated Ivette Konopka of Holy Cross to move into Sunday's B-Flight semifinals and Jes Asselin topped Amy McDevitt of Providence in the First Round of the C Flight. Lauren Garbade and Jes Messing posted straight set wins in the D-Flight to also earn semifinal berths. Mayer won 6-1 and 6-0 over Kara Pease of Hartford, while Sandhu toppled Hartford's Kasey Michels 6-1 and 6-3 to advance. Rissolo and Sinha complete the final four in the A Flight. If Mayer and Sandhu can win their first match tomorrow, they will meet in the finals at 1 p.m. That match would follow the doubles final, which pits the duo against Hartford's top tandem at 10:30 a.m. The B Flight doubles final features Asselin and Nicole Ross (also of Shaker High) against McDevitt and Albert of Providence. Tournament play resumes with singles semifinal play at 9 a.m.
