Siena Women's Tennis Blanks Central Connecticut 7-0 in Regular-Season Finale

April 18, 2002

The Siena College Women's Tennis Team closed out the regular spring season with a 7-0 whitewashing of Central Connecticut State University today. It was the Saints second consecutive shutout of the opposition. The women have won the last 13 individual matches and seven doubles matches the team members have played. Today, they were led by Nikki Mayer (Latham, NY/Shaker) and Andrea Disponzio (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale), at #1 and #2 singles respectively who double bageled the opponents by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores after combining at #1 doubles for an 8-1 victory.

Also playing at top form for the Siena women were the #2 doubles team of Brooke Fisher (Katonah, NY/John Jay) and Vicki Dunham (Long Beach, NY/ Sacred Heart) who extended their undefeated game streak to 23 with an 8-0 drubbing of Central Connecticut's #2 team. The duo hasn't lost a game since they came back from a 5-1 deficit last Saturday to beat Niagara's #2 doubles 8-5 by winning 7 games in a row. The next day, they made it 15 games in a row when they blanked Canisius 8-0.

The Saints Betsy Brookin's (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) upped her singles record to 7-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Central Connecticut's Betsy Bailey at #3 singles. Rounding out the Siena sweep was Brooke Fisher with a 6-1, 6-1 route at #4 single.

"It's a great way to finish the season," Siena Head Coach Jeff Bloomberg said after the match. "It's nice to go into this weekend's MAAC Tournament on such an upbeat note. The tournament is going to be tough, but if we continue to play the way we have been we will turn some heads."

The Saints expect to be seeded #5 or 6 in the upcoming tournament, which will begin this Friday at the National Tennis Center, the home of the U.S. Open.
