Marist Knocks Off Siena Women in MAAC Tennis Match

April 9, 2008

Final Stats

Junior Sarah Mayer defeated reigning MAAC Player of the Year Christine Ong 6-0 and 6-3 at top singles, but Marist controlled the rest of the match in a 6-1 MAAC win Wednesday afternoon in Loudonville. The Red Foxes swept the doubles competition and took the remaining five singles matches.

"I was very pleased with the team's effort today," head coach Tim O'Brien said. "We're moving in the right direction."

Mayer, who was named MAAC Player of the Week for the second time this season yesterday, had surprisingly little trouble with Ong - an opponent she lost to last season. After blanking Ong in the first set, she coasted to a 6-3 win to seal the match.

Karina Davis also had a strong effort at second singles, before falling 6-1 and 6-4 to Erin Godley. Sisters Cassie and Alexa Starnge won at #3 and #4 singles respectively for the Red Foxes - the defending MAAC Champions.
