Women's Swimming Falls to Fairfield in Home Opener
Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena women's swimming team was defeated by Fairfield 127-101 in the first-ever Division I swim meet held at Siena College on Wednesday. The meet was the second of the season for the Saints in the first year of the program. The first outing came in a tri-meet at St. Peter's College where the Saints defeated St. Peter's and Wagner, while falling to St. Francis (Pa.) The Saints jumped out to an early 11-6 lead after the first event as the relay team of Raina Paul (Toronto, Canada), Julie Herrmann, Kelly Pangburn (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Martha Kroll (Oxford, Conn) won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.43. The Saints would remain on top behind the first place finishes of Pangburn in the 200 freestyle (1:57.94) and Kroll in the 50 freestyle (:25.17), giving Siena a 40-34 lead after four events. The Saints would lose 16 points in the diving portion of the meet as Siena's lone diver, Danille Tardiff, would score as an exhibition, giving Fairfield a sweep in the event, and a 62-47 lead after six events. Siena would battle back late in the meet behind first-place finishes by freshmen Kroll in the 100 freestyle (:55.36), Pangburn in the 500 freestyle (5:20.83) and Paul in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.50) to cut Fairfield's lead to 127-90.
Fairfield's three swimmers in the last event were exhibition swimmers, giving the Saints relay team 11 points for the first place victory, and a final 127-101 defeat
