Stags Slip Past Siena Swimming and Diving, 151-147
Oct. 25, 2008
Several newcomers sported impressive afternoons, but the Saints could not rally from an early deficit as Fairfield edged the Siena swimming and diving team 151-147 in Fairfield, Conn. Sophomore Brittany Pavolko led the Saints (0-2, 0-1), capturing three total victories for the day. Fairfield (2-1, 2-0) built a commanding lead early on, opening as much as a 25 point advantage halfway through the meet. The Saints battled back but could finish no closer than the final margin of four points. "This was a tough loss and some things didn't go our way, but our team really battled back and I think it will give us a lot of momentum going into Holy Cross on Wednesnday," reflected head coach Greg Brown. Michelle Yoshida, Lauren Kennedy and Katie Merz were all double event winners for the Stags. Additionally, each of Yoshida's victories set new Fairfield records. Pavolko paced the Saints, capturing pool pacing times in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Additionally, she teamed with Lauren Garrigan, Lauren Maxwell and MaryAnn Gaffuri to win the 200 medley relay. Other Siena winners on the afternoon included Garrigan in the 100 back, Elizabeth Rice in 1M dives, Molly Chamberlain in the 100 free and the team of Chamberlain, Gaffuri, Caitlyn Biagioli and Rachel McShane in the 200 free relay.
"Molly and Lauren were outstanding today and really picked our team up by giving us key wins at important times," added Brown. The Saints open their home slate on Wednesday night against Holy Cross. Events are set to get underway at 7 p.m. |
