Oct. 20, 2007
Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena Women's Swimming and Diving team split their season opening tri-meet this afternoon by defeating MAAC rival Niagara 132-108 and falling to New Hampshire (2-0) 144-95 at the Siena Swim Center. UNH defeated Niagara 139-78 in their head-to-head battle to come out on top of the meet. For the afternoon a total of four pool records were set while freshman Brittany Pavolko (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) set a pair of new Siena records. Pavolko's record setting performances came in the 200 IM and 100 fly events. In the 200 IM, Pavolko paced the pool with a time of 2:13.81, breaking the previous school and pool records. In the 100 fly, Pavolko's time of :59.12 proved to be more than a half second better than Siena's Dana Golino who had held the previous record which was set in 2004. "We had high expectations for Brittany entering this season and today she definitely surpassed them," noted Head Coach Greg Brown. In addition to Pavolko's record setting day, fellow freshman Caitlyn Biagioli (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took home the Saints other overall top finish with a time of :25.18 in the 50-yard freestyle. Biagioli also captured an individual victory over Niagara in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.87. The Saints (1-1) captured two more head-to-head victories in their match up with the Purple Eagles (0-2). The relay team of Bridget Rowland, Kaedy Graves, Pavolko and Allison O'Keefe led the Saints to a 200-yard medley relay victory in the first event of the day. Rowland followed up her team triumph with an individual victory in the 100-yard backstroke event with a time of 1:02.49.
"This was the best overall team performance that we had since I have been the coach here," added Brown. New Hampshire meanwhile had a record setting day of their own as in addition to Pavolko's pool record, the Wildcats left Loudonville laying claim to three new record setting times. Amy Perrault's time of :24.77 in the 50 free proved to be a mere two one hundredths of a second better than Siena's Ashley Serrago's time of :24.79 back in 2003. Teammate Deanna Petchonka also set a new pool record with a time of :57.57 in the 100 fly, while the Wildcats as a team recorded a record setting time of 1:52.37 in the 200-yard medley relay. The Saints will return to action next Saturday when they host Fairfield at the Siena Swim Center. The first event is slated to get underway at 1 p.m.
