Canisius Takes Two from Siena Softball
May 5, 2007
Canisius jumped out to a 3-0 lead before holding off a Siena rally for a 3-2 victory in the opener and the Golden Griffins rode the right arm of Lindsay Garbacz to an 8-0 victory in the second game, completing a doubleheader sweep of Siena in Loudonville Saturday. Jamie Gerace's two-run home run in the first inning of the first game got the Golden Griffins off and running. Canisius added a single run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Ashley Bonetto to take a 3-0 lead, but the Saints rallied. Renee Clavette led off the fourth inning with an RBI opposite field double into the left centerfield gap, and scored Siena's first run on a throwing error. The Saints inched closer on Easton Henrikson's sixth inning home run, but couldn't manage the tying score. Jamie Piela was solid in the circle for the Saints, tossing a complete game in suffering the hard-luck loss. Piela allowed just five hits and three runs while striking out six. Courtney Pair earned her 10th win of the season, pitching a complete game two hitter for the Griffs, while sacrificing just one earned run to go along with 10 strikeouts. Canisius rode the momentum of its game one victory into the second game as they scored five runs in their first at bat. After a single run in the third, the Golden Griffins clinched the win with two runs in the sixth. Garbacz pitched six strong innings, allowing just two hits and collecting 10 strikeouts to improve to 9-6 on the season in the circle. Leadoff hitter Jenny Maheu went 3-for-3 with a home run and Jess Martin was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Angela Turney also had two hits, a home run and three RBI in the win. Andrea Piela and Jennifer Granato had hits for Siena, which finished its MAAC season with a 7-11 record.
Senior Janelle Iaquinto pitched five innings in relief and allowed just one earned run. Iaquinto and seniors Caitlin Fairclough and Kelly Boyle will be honored before the Saints' final games of the season tomorrow. Siena will square off with Quinnipiac on Senior Day at noon here in Loudonville. |
