Sacred Heart Sweeps Siena Softball

April 22, 2008

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sacred Heart's Melissa Mezzanotte led the Pioneers' offense as they defeated Siena (12-26) softball in both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at Loudonville. Sacred Heart (19-21) won game one 1-0 in a pitcher's duel and 6-3 in game two.

Game one went scoreless through five innings until Mezzanotte hit a solo shot to centerfield. The one run was all Megan Spehar needed to earn the win. She pitched the complete game shutout, giving up just four hits. She struck out seven.

Jamie Piela gave up one run on three hits in the complete game effort. In Piela's last two starts, she's pitched 14 innings and given up one run on four hits with a 1-1 record.

In game two, Siena jumped on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning when Jamie Piela scored on a wild pitch and Stacie Sueda followed with an RBI-single, plating Olivia Calcagnini.

Mezzanotte responded for Sacred Heart in the third with a two-run homer. Her two home runs against the Saints were the first two of the season.

Mezzanotte struck again in the fifth when she hit an RBI-single scoring Spehar. Adrian Fitzsimon tacked on another run with an RBI-single that scored Mezanotte. Shannon McCoy completed the three-run inning for the Pioneers with another RBI-single that brought in Fitzsimon.

Pitcher Jen Russell helped herself in the sixth with an RBI-single that scored Jessica Perez and gave Sacred Heart a 6-2 lead.

Siena cut the margin in the seventh with an RBI-single off the bat of Lauren Weingart, but the Pioneers held on for the win.

Russell earned the complete game win, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits. She struck out six.
