Saints Lose in Penalty Shootout in MAAC Tournament

Nov. 7, 2008

Final Stats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena women’s soccer tied Fairfield 0-0 through 110:00 minutes, but lost on penalty kicks 5-4 Friday afternoon in Loudonville. Fairfield moves on to face top-seed Loyola in the MAAC Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Siena Turf Field. Siena’s season concludes with a 0-0 tie, bringing their overall record to 13-2-4.

Siena and Fairfield (14-4-3, 7-2-0) battled through two overtimes with the defenses and goalkeepers playing superb. The two teams played an even first half with scoring chances on both sides, but Siena outshot Fairfield 9-4 and put three on goal.

The second half and two overtimes were controlled by Fairfield and forced Siena’s team defense and goalkeeper Laura Ettinger to step up. They did. Ettinger made nine saves in the game, earning her eighth shutout of the season. The game came down to penalty kicks.

The first four shooters on each team (Maren Serafine, Cara Riley, Maria DeMatteo and Marissa Shibley for the Saints and Robyn Decker, Ahna Johnson, Chrissie Sidie and Nicole Cavallaro for the Stags) all scored. In the fifth round, Kelly Boudreau saved senior captain Shana Brady’s shot and Casey Frobey scored the clinching goal as Fairfield won the penalty shootout 5-4.

The heartbreaking loss ended Siena’s season, but didn’t take away from their record setting achievements this season. The Saints set program records with 13 wins and their best start ever at 8-0-2. It was also a banner year for many individual players and brings high expectations for the young team next season.
