Siena Women's Lacrosse Knocks Off Central Connecticut, 13-9

NEW BRITAIN, CT -- The Siena women's lacrosse team amassed 13 goals on 34 shots en route to a 13-9 victory over host Central Connecticut State University in a nightcap at Arute Field. With the win, the Saints improve to 8-6 on the season while the Blue Devils fall to 4-11.

Sophomore Christina Pampalone (East Northport, NY) recorded a team high four goals, while freshman Amy Schoonmaker (Simsbury, CT) three goals and an assist for four points. Senior Joan Paul (Schenectady, N.Y.) added two goals and dished one assist for three points. Sophomore Tammy Vitolins (Averill Park, NY) netted two goals while senior Karla Grudgel (Webster, N.Y.) came off the bench and accounted for one goal.

Just 3:00 minutes into the contest, Abby Hayes struck first to give the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead. Her unassisted goal was her first of two for the day. The Saints then rattled off five of the next six goals to take a 5-2 advantage into the locker room at the break. Schoonmaker scored two of the goals in the run for Siena.

The Saints scored first in the second half when Paul scored a goal off a Schoonmaker assist 13 seconds into play. The Saints opened their lead to 10-3 with 14:46 to play before Central went on a run of their own. The Blue Devils scored five of the next six goals spanning 11 minutes to cut the Siena lead to 11-8 with 3:50 to play in regulation. Danielle Adams scored the first two goals of the run three minutes apart. Her first off an assist from Capobianco and the second was a free position attempt.

The Saints sealed the victory when they scored two goals in the next two minutes to put them ahead 13-8 with 1:34 to play. Gudgel and Schoonmaker provided the insurance goals for Siena.

Defensively, Leah Ciaccio (Skaneateles, NY) and Mary Behr (Oceanside, NY) forced a game-high three turnovers. Sophomore attack wing specialist Michelle Eider (Pearl River, NY) and freshman Morgan Donovan (Liverpool, NY) each caused two Blue Devils turnovers. As a team, the Saints forced eight turnovers while committing 18. CCSU grabbed 18 groundballs to Siena's 13, while the Saints won 14-of-8 draw controls.

Starting in the net for the first time this season, Katie Ostrye (Katonah, NY) claimed her first win between the pipes stopping three Blue Devils shots, Ostrye also had two groundballs; goalie Amanda Zabel nabbed 16 saves for CCSU.

The Saints return to action on Saturday, April 24, at 10 a.m., when they host Niagara.
