Sarah Szewczyk Named NEC Rookie of the Week

Sept. 22, 2008

Loudonville, N.Y. - Siena field hockey freshman Sarah Szewczyk was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week as announced this afternoon by conference headquarters. The West Ossipee, N.H. native notched a pair of goals last weekend in her first collegiate action.

"I'm extremely excited for Sarah," said head coach Bill Davidson. "To have missed significant time due to injury earlier this season and come back and perform the way she has is a testament to her and an inspiration to the rest of her team."

Szewczyk is the first field hockey conference award winner this season and first Siena field hockey player to be named NEC Rookie of the Week since teammate Kristin McGorty earned the award for the week of Oct. 2, 2006.

After missing most of preseason and the first three regular season games due to injury, Szewczyk made her debut on the turf this weekend and did not disappoint. On Friday, Szewczyk tallied her first career goal at Fairfield and then added her second in as many games vs. Holy Cross on Sunday. Both of her goals came at important times as each tied the game.

For the week, Szewczyk finished with two goals, four total points and registered all four of her shots on goal.

Szewczyk and the Saints return to action Saturday to begin a four game road trip, starting with a stop at Bucknell. Game time is slated for 12 noon.
