Martinez, Sanders Propel Cornell Past Saints, 3-0

Sept. 7, 2008

Final Stats

Albany, N.Y. - Cornell's Sara Sanders record a goal and an assist and Belen Martinez added the game winner as the Big Red sent the Siena Field Hockey team to its second consecutive 3-0 defeat this evening at Alumni Turf Field. The Saints fell to 0-3 on the young season, while Cornell improved to 1-2.

Martinez put the Big Red up just over seven minutes into the action. After the Saints' Brittany Moran recorded a stellar defensive save, Martinez corralled the rebound and fired it home for the eventual game winner.

Martinez along with teammate Kate Thompson peppered the Siena cage with 10 shots apiece. Seven of Martinez's shots were on goal.

Cornell padded its lead to 2-0 five minutes later when Kelley Kantarian redirected Sanders' shot following a penalty corner. The Big Red dominated in corners with 19, while the Saints were shutout in that department.

Sanders capped the scoring just moments into the second half, stick handling through three Siena defenders before firing home Cornell's third and final tally.

Andrea Caso led the Siena offensive recording both of the team's shots. Cornell harbored a 30-2 advantage in shots for the contest. Renee Clavette played the majority of the game between the pipes for the Green and Gold, notching eight saves.

The Saints return to Loudonville for their first true home game Saturday against LaSalle. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
