Lady Stags Stand Tall Against Saints on Senior Day, 74-57

Bridgeport, Conn. - The Siena women's basketball team dropped their third straight in a 74-57 loss to Fairfield in Bridgeport, Conn. Lady Stags junior guard Sabra Wrice exploded for 36 points which marks a career-high and program record. Laura Menty led the Saints in scoring for the seventh straight game posting 17 points going 6-for-9 from the field. Fairfield jumped out to an early advantage, but then with 11:34 remaining on the clock senior co-captain Katelyn Dooley drained a trey from the right corner to put the Saints on top 18-16. Dooley tallied 11 points in 40 minutes of action. On the very next possession, the hot shooting Wrice drained a 3-pointer to put Fairfield back up 19-18. Wrice was responsible for 17 of the Lady Stags first 24 points. She began the game a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. With just five seconds remaining in the half, junior guard Melissa Manzer connected on a three point play giving the Saints a 34-32 advantage to enter intermission. Manzer finished with 15 points and four assists on the night. The teams traded the lead five times to open the second half before Fairfield went on a 9-0 spurt to take a 50-42 advantage at the 10:48 mark. The Saints responded with a mini run of their own cutting the lead to 54-52 on a Menty lay-up at 7:47. This would be the closest the Saints would get as Fairfield retaliated with a 16-2 run to take a commanding 70-54 advantage with 2:07 remaining. The Lady Stags hit their free throws down the stretch to run off with a 74-57 win on Senior Night. The Saints tallied just five points over the last seven minutes of the contest. Fairfield capitalized on Siena's 21 turnovers recording 32 points on these mishaps. The Lady Stags outshot Siena going 54.9% from the field to the Saints 41.8% field goal percentage. Siena was perfect from the charity stripe connecting on all six of their free-throw attempts. Menty went a perfect 5-for-5 from the line after a sub par performance at Rider on Saturday.
With the loss, the Saints extend their losing streak to three games. Siena returns to action on Friday night when they face off with Niagara in their final home contest of the season. The Saints will honor senior co-captains Naimah Abdullah and Dooley in Senior Night ceremonies. Tip time is slated for 7 p.m. |
