UConn Holds Off Men's Tennis, 5-2
Oct. 2, 2007 Led by senior captain Christian Malerba, the University of Connecticut men's tennis team defeated Siena, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at the UConn Tennis Courts. Siena's Jeremy Deuel defeated Joe Goldstein 6-4, 2-6 and 6-2 at top singles. UConn is now 2-0 in dual match play this fall. Siena falls to 1-5. Malerba defeated Robert Cooperman, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 5 match and then partnered with Joey Michaels for an 8-5 doubles win. The Huskies were victorious in all three doubles matches played. Goldstein and Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass.) won 9-7 at No.1 over Deuel and Nick Rutherford, while Tom Cook and Andrew Marcus took the No. 3 match, 8-4. At #2 singles, Siena's Nick Rutherford earned an impressive 6-4 and 6-1 triumph. In other singles action, Michaels found success at No.3 over Stefen Putyera, winning 7-5, 6-2. Marcus took down his opponent, Kevin Gioia, by the same score at No. 4 and Cook defeated Shawn Conroy in the No. 6 match, 6-1, 6-0. At No.1, Goldstein fell to Jeremy Deuel in a three-set match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Schueler lost a 6-4, 6-1 match at No.2
