Steve Skonieczny and Matt Turcio Claim MAAC Weekly Awards

Oct. 27, 2008

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny won MAAC Defensive Player of the Week while freshman Matt Turcio took Rookie of the Week honors. The Saints won both games this week against Niagara and Canisius and sit in second place in the MAAC standings at 5-1.

Skonieczny (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) made nine saves including a six-save shutout against Canisius Sunday afternoon. He posted a goals-against average of .50, a save percentage of .900 and the only goal he allowed was on a penalty kick. Skonieczny is third in the nation with 6.38 saves per game.

Turcio (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) assisted on the game winning goal against Canisius Sunday afternoon. He drilled a shot that was saved by the keeper but the rebound went right to Anthony Tagliaferri who shot it in the open net. Turcio leads the Saints with three assists. This is his second Rookie of the Week award.
