Men's Soccer Adds Two More to Coaching Staff

Aug. 27, 2008

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -Aidan Byrne and Steve Wieczorek have joined Siena's men's soccer coaching staff. Byrne will be responsible for working with the defensive unit, match day analysis and working on the improvement of the team's strength and conditioning. Wieczorek's primary role will be working with the goalkeepers, recruiting in the Northeast and day-to-day operations of the program.

Byrne arrives from Mount Ida College where he was an assistant coach for six years. Over that period, he helped the team to two NAC Championships and the school's first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

"I am excited to have Aidan join our new staff," said head coach Gareth Elliott. "As a previous teammate, I know he has the knowledge, passion and work ethic required to be successful at the Division I level."

As a player, Byrne played at Mount Ida as a freshman and sophomore from 1995-97 before transferring to the University of Rhode Island for his junior and senior years. As a Mustang he was named to the All-New England team in 1995 and 1996 and was named to the First Team All-America in 1996. As a Ram he earned a place on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team. He then played professionally for the Rhode Island Stingrays in 1999-2000.

Wieczorek arrives at Siena after two seasons at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, where he helped the team reach the NCAA DII National Tournament in 2007.

"I am delighted to have Steve on board," said Elliott. "His experience, energy and enthusiasm will be a huge addition to our staff. I look forward to seeing the progress of the goalkeepers under his guidance."

At Bridgeport, Wieczorek coached the goalkeepers, recruited potential student-athletes, scouted opponents, and helped with daily operations of the program.

In 2004, Wieczorek coached the goalkeepers at his alma mater Fairfield University. He was a member of two NSCAA Top 25 teams in 2000 and 2001, each of those teams reaching the MAAC finals.

Wieczorek is currently an Assistant Director with Tony DiCicco's Soccer Plus Goalkeeper school, and has coached youth soccer in Fairfield, Easton, Monroe and with South Central Premier's Development Academy Team in Connecticut. He holds a NSCAA National Diploma and NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma.
