EASTON, Pa. - In a battle of two defensive-minded squads, the Siena College men's soccer team (6-8-1) was defeated by the Lafayette Leopards (4-9) 2-0 in non-conference action at Metzgar Field.

The two teams had an even match through the first half with the shot total even at 3-3. In the second half, Lafayette seized the offensive momentum. Junior defender Mike Saioni took a corner kick serve from freshman Jamie Mullarkey and headed home the first goal of the game at 65:51. Saioni's game-winning tally was his second goal in the last two games.

Lafayette added an insurance goal just under 10 minutes later, as sophomore defender Paul Coelho beat Siena goalkeeper Andrew Sether (Garden City, N.Y./Valley Stream South) to the left hand corner of the net. Sophomore Adam Decker and freshman assisted on the goal at 76:33.

Siena was not without its chances in the second half, as the Saints forced Lafayette senior goalkeeper Drew Stotler to make three second-half saves. Stotler, who had played just 14 minutes in the Leopards' first 12 games, earned the first shutout of his collegiate career. He replaced two-time All-Patriot League goalie Craig Schroeder in the lineup. Schroeder's season came to a premature end when he suffered a broken jaw in the Leopards' win at Lehigh on Oct. 14.

For the game, Lafayette outshot Siena 14-8 thanks to an 11-5 advantage in the final half. Siena's goalie, Sether, made four saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes.

The Saints will next be in action at home on Saturday October 21 against Rider at 1:00 p.m.
