Loyola Holds on For 1-0 Win Over Siena
Oct. 7, 2000 BALTIMORE, MD - Niall Lepper converted a penalty kick 13:43 into the contest, and Loyola survived a late Siena rally to defeat the Saints, 1-0, here on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Curley Field. The win keeps the Greyhounds' perfect Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record in tact at 4-0-0. Loyola (7-2-0) had some early scoring chances, and was driving to the goal again, when a cross into the box was knocked down with a hand by a Siena defender. The Greyhounds were awarded a penalty kick, and Lepper delivered, providing the only scoring of the afternoon. The Greyhounds had numerous scoring opportunities in the second half, including three shots that hit the post, but could not convert to seal the win. Siena (4-7-1) nearly tied the game with under a minute to play. The Saints had a flurry in the goal mouth, and Loyola keeper Reb Beatty came off his line to make a play. As the ball appeared to be crossing the goal line, Loyola defender Michael Nelson cleared it away, preserving the shutout. Loyola outshots Siena, 7-3, this afternoon, and took five corners to the Saints' none. The shutout was Loyola's fifth of the season, improving a team goals against average that ranked sixth in the nation coming into the contest.
The Greyhounds return to action again tomorrow, as they host Marist at 2:00 p.m. at Curley Field.
