Siena men's soccer ousted by New Hampshire, 2-0
Sep. 9, 2001 BURLINGTON, VT. - The University of New Hampshire Wildcats broke open a tight game with two goals early in the second half and went on to a 2-0 victory over Siena in the opening round of the Smith Barney Soccer Classic at the University of Vermont Saturday. New Hampshire (1-1-0) got the game-winner just 7:07 into the second half when junior Andy Karam (Schenectady, N.Y.) crossed the ball to senior Adam Purcell (Barrington, R.I.) inthe crease. Purcell, second in the nation in goals last year with 22, made no mistake from point-blank range to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. At the 60-minute mark, New Hampshire made it 2-0 when senior Drew Ferrigno (Southwick, Mass.) finished off a feed from captain Doug Lawyer (Doylestown, Penn.) in front. Shaun O'Neil (Wrentham, Mass.) made six saves in net for UNH, while Siena's Andrew Sether (Garden City, N.Y.) stopped four.
On Sunday, New Hampshire will take on Bucknell at noon, with Vermont and Siena to tangle at 2:00 p.m. in the second day of the Smith Barney Soccer Classic.
