Loudonville, N.Y. - Siena men's soccer coach Gareth Elliott announced today the appointments of midfielders Ross Cardinell and Sebastien Anzevui as team captains for the upcoming 2008 fall season. The duo will look to lead the Green and Gold in their transition under a new coaching staff.
"I think that they have shown through the spring season that they are well respected by their peers and also display the qualities necessary for leading us in the upcoming season," noted Elliott.
Cardinell, a local product from Loudonville by way of Shaker High, will be a senior this fall. Last season, he was one of just four Saints to start in all 20 games and was an anchor at the midfield corps. Cardinell returns for his final season in the Green and Gold as one of the most experienced returnees, having appeared in 52 games, recording two goals and six points.
Anzevui becomes part of a rare breed, a sophomore who will be a captain. A native from Tynemouth, Tyne & Wear in the United Kingdom, Anzevui impressed during his freshman campaign, posting a goal and two assists for four points. He was one of just three freshmen to make at least 18 starts and was a fixture at the center midfield.
The Saints are coming off of a 6-10-4 campaign in 2007 in which the team advanced to the Second Round of the MAAC Tournament. Siena begins a new era under Elliott with the season opener on Aug. 30 in Loudonville against NJIT.
