Canisius Upends Men's Soccer

Oct. 21, 2006

Final Stats

Loudonville, N.Y. - Griffs midfielder Mariano Sapien posted the game winning goal in the 14th minute to lead Canisius past Siena 1-0 on Siena Field. Due to inclement weather yesterday afternoon, this league contest was rescheduled for this morning. The Saints drop to 1-5-1 in the MAAC.

The Griffs got on the board early when Sapien sent a rebound past goalkeeper Patrick Henry (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington). In the 14th minute, senior Rudy Pikuzinski fired a free kick around the Siena wall, which was saved by Henry as he popped it into the air. Sapien charged the rebound, and then placed a header in the top right corner to put the Griffs up 1-0. Henry tallied six saves between the pipes.

In the 80th minute, freshman Robert DiFilippo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) slightly missed an opportunity to even the game. DeFilippo settled an entry pass on the right side with his back to the goal. DiFilippo gathered himself, quickly turned then blasted a shot just above the crossbar.

Canisius improves to 3-2-1 in league play. They travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. tomorrow to face Marist at 1 p.m. The Saints look to rebound tomorrow when they take on Niagara at 1 p.m. on Siena Field.
