Men's Soccer Battles Rider To 1-1 Tie In Double Overtime
Oct. 14, 2005
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena (2-8-1, 0-1-1) dominated the offense and played with great intensity in a rain filled afternoon game on a wet Siena Field and came away with a 1-1 double overtime tie against the Rider Broncs (2-7-3, 1-1-1) in league action today. Trailing by one goal with less than seven minutes showing on the clock, tri-captain T.J. Helly (Carmel, N.Y.) let loose on a shot from the top of the box that ricocheted off a defender allowing it to deviate from its original course just enough to slip by Rider goalie Daniel Riverso to knot the game up. The score would remain that way through regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions as a deluge took grip on the capital region. As the rain kept falling so came the Siena shots, in overtime the Green and Gold outshot Rider 8-1. With five seconds remaining in the second overtime, Caio Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had a one-on-one breakaway opportunity and slid into a shot that sprayed off the cross bar just before time expired. Junior Patrick Henry (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) made seven saves in the game and went the entire 110 minutes between the pipes for the Saints. The Green and Gold had a balanced offensive barrage with eight separate players getting shots on goal. In all, 13 Saints players rattled off at least one shot. After Rider dominated the shots 5-3 in the first half, Siena found its second wind after intermission outshooting the Broncs 24-5. The Saints close out this two game homestand on Sunday, Oct. 16, with another conference match this time against Loyola with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
