Men's Soccer Defeats Saint Peter's 3-1 in MAAC Opener
Oct. 10, 2008
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore Sebastien Anzevui scored two goals including the game-winner as the Saints defeated Saint Peter's 3-1 in their MAAC opener Friday afternoon in Loudonville. Siena (3-5-1, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on Anzevui's first goal of the game. Joe Tavernese took the ball down the left side and played a low cross from the end line to Anzevui who slammed it in the back of the net from the middle of the six yard box. Saint Peter's (4-4-2, 0-1) tied it up in the 36th minute on a goal by Rumen Kerekov. Gamal Breedy hit a long ball down the right side to Kerekov who ran onto it and touched a looping volley over the charging goalkeeper Steve Skonieczny for the 1-1 tie. The Saints came out of halftime charged up, scoring the go-ahead goal in the first minute. Siena earned a free kick just outside the penalty box where Anzevui bent his shot past goalkeeper Matthew Lawlor at the near post. Joe Tavernese scored an insurance goal 11 minutes later on a cross from Steve Covino. Lawlor got a hand on the shot but couldn't keep it from deflecting into the net. Saint Peter's outshot Siena 17-11 in the game, but the Green and Gold defense stood tall blocking seven shots and holding on for the win. Skonieczny made five saves. The Saints host Manhattan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
