Saints Topped by Cross-Town Rival UAlbany 3-1

Sept. 20, 2006

Final Stats

Loudonville, N.Y. - Men's soccer fell short to cross-town rival UAlbany 3-1 at Varsity Field this afternoon. A three goal outburst in the second half proved to be enough for the Great Danes to top the Saints. Tufi Long scored the game-winning goal in the 67th minute, and Brian Gordon added another just minutes later to secure the victory.

After a scoreless first half, Siena mounted their attack early in the second when midfielder Ross Cardinell (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) dished the ball to junior Thomas Ciovacco (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), who blasted a shot from the left side past the UAlbany goaltender to put the Saints up 1-0.

The Great Danes responded in the 66th minute when senior Yan Gbolo added his first goal of the year off a breakaway. Just over a minute later, Long got behind the Siena defense and added the game winner assisted by sophomore Erik DiLorenzo. Gordon added the insurance goal at 71:43 when he sent an arching shot from outside the box that found the back of the net.

Sophomore goaltender Steward Ceus accumulated four saves in goal for the Great Danes in a winning effort. Goaltender Patrick Henry (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) also tallied four saves on the game, and moves him into a sixth place tie for career saves as a Saint (234).

The Saints drop to 1-4-1 on the season and welcome the University at Buffalo to Siena Field on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
