Four Saints Earn Preseason Accolades from Inside Lacrosse

Dec. 22, 2008

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Junior goalie Brent Herbst was named preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse's annual Face-Off Yearbook. Herbst is an honorable mention on the team while teammates Matt Girsh, Ryan Duggan, and Chris Viviano were named All-Conference.

"It is a great honor for Brent, as well as his teammates and the program for him to be named to the preseason All-American team," head coach Brian Brecht said. "The team results at the end of the season are what we are focused on right now. I am very much aware of how we finish at the end of the season will determine the individual honors we receive as a program. It would be exciting for both Brent and the Siena program to be mentioned in a post season release in addition to this preseason release."

Herbst (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) posted a 10-5 record last season and led the nation with a 6.07 goals-against average. He ranked second with a .640 save percentage. Herbst was named All-MAAC Second Team and selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team last season.

Girsh (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), a senior attackman, led the Saints in goals scored the last three seasons. In 2008 he scored 32 goals and had 11 assists earning him All-MAAC Second Team honors. His 151 career points place him sixth on the school's all-time list.

Duggan (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), a junior attackman, scored 28 goals and notched 13 assists last season. He was named All-MAAC First Team. His 78 career points rank tied for 24th on the school's all-time list.

Viviano (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Chaminade), a senior defenseman, caused a team-high 14 turnovers and collected 46 groundballs last season. He also contributed offensively with three goals. He made the All-MAAC First Team the past two years.

"All three of these players have been key contributors over the past few years as our program has grown," said Brecht. "It is exciting for them to be honored before the season by the other coaches based on their performance from last year. Being a team sport, I know in each of these three players' hearts, it is more important for them to be playing in May than receiving post season honors in May."
