Brent Herbst Tops Nation in Goals-Against Average
June 18, 2008
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore goalie Brent Herbst (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) was named the 2008 Division I statistical champion for goals-against average by the NCAA last week. Herbst led all Division I goalies with a 6.08 GAA. As a team, Siena ranked first in team defense, allowing just 6.25 goals per game. Herbst, an All-MAAC Second Team selection, recorded 10 wins in his 15 starts for the Saints. He also placed second in the nation in save percentage, stopping 64% of the shots he faced. "Brent played great all year and looked like an All-American goalie between the pipes for us this spring," said head coach Brian Brecht. "He was at his best in the big wins over Harvard and Loyola holding them to 5 and 4 goals respectively. There is no doubt Brent has been a big part to our program having back-to-back 10 win seasons, as the future continues to look bright for our program." Siena led all Division I schools in team defense, giving up just 100 goals in 16 games. "I am extremely proud of our team to complete a 16 game schedule as a program against some very good competition and be able to finish as the number one ranked defense in Division I," said Brecht. "With Brent in the goal as well as three of our four captains on defense, it shows that we had very strong leadership at that end of the field." Siena finished the season with an overall record of 10-6 and 4-4 in MAAC play.
