Several Men's Lacrosse Players Honored at MAAC Banquet
May 1, 2008
Loudonville, N.Y. - Eleven Siena men's lacrosse players were honored this evening at the annual MAAC Men's Lacrosse Banquet held at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Albany. Ryan Duggan and Chris Viviano garnered All-MAAC First Team honors, while Matt Girsh and Brent Herbst were added to the Second Team. Tim Hannigan, Kevin Hogan, JP Mulhall, Kevin Reilly, Charly Rogener Mike Whalen and Herbst all placed on the conference's All-Academic Team. A sophomore attackman from East Setauket, N.Y., Duggan ranked second on the Saints in goals (28) and points (41), while also scooping 17 groundballs. His goals total was third best in the MAAC, while he was fourth overall in points. Duggan was also the conference's Player of the Week for Mar. 25. Viviano, a junior defenseman from New Hyde Park, N.Y. was elevated to captain earlier in the season and was a stalwart on one of the nation's top back lines. He led the Saints in caused turnovers (12) and all Siena defensemen in goals (3) and groundballs (46). Girsh, who accrued MAAC Offensive Player of the Year accolades last season, had another strong year leading the Siena attack. He led both the team and the MAAC in goals (32) and was second in the conference with 43 points. The Tewaarton Award Watch List honoree was also named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on Mar. 11.
Herbst meanwhile had arguably the finest season between the pipes in program history. As of Sunday's updated national statistics, Herbst ranked second in all of Division I in goals against average (6.07) and save percentage (.640). He also was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week a league leading four times. Attackman Chris Zarins was also present at the banquet and awarded a certificate for his Player of the Week Award for Feb. 25. He finished the season third on the team in goals (19) and points (31). Hannigan, Hogan, Mulhall, Reilly, Rogener, Whalen and Herbst were all integral parts to the team's success both on and off the field. Each tabulated GPA's of at least 3.20, the conference's bar for being eligible to be named to the All-Academic Team. Senior Captain Hannigan led the team with a 3.75 GPA. |
