Final Stats

Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena men's lacrosse team used six goals from attackmen Matt Girsh (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Ryan Duggan (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) to knock off the Jaspers 10-9 this afternoon in Orangeburg, N.Y. This marked Siena's (4-3, 2-0) first win over Manhattan in their last eight meetings.

Duggan opened up the scoring when notched a goal with 4:07 left in the first quarter. Manhattan responded when senior attackman Jeremy Marrano put the Jaspers on the board with his first goal of the contest. Marrano posted five of Manhattan's nine goals on the afternoon.

The Saints began the second quarter with back-to-back goals coming from Girsh and then freshman midfielder Brendan Murphy (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin). However, Manhattan answered with a mini-streak of their own as they rallied for three consecutive goals capped off by a Luke Dilillo score 18 seconds prior to the half. This proved to be their only lead of the contest.

The Jaspers wouldn't stand on top very long as 11 seconds later Duggan found the back of the net after taking a feed from midfielder Charly Rogener (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West). Rogener also took the majority of the Saints face-offs and went 8-for-15 in the contest.

Kenny Mazzone, a sophomore midfielder, followed with a goal of his own just a second before the horn sounded giving Siena a 5-4 advantage at intermission. The Saints never looked back as they cruised from this point on.

Girsh posted two goals in the third quarter and Duggan added another to remain in control. Then in the final period Shaun Dunn (Amityville, N.Y./Chaminade) delivered back-to-back goals to secure the Saints first victory over Manhattan since the 1998 campaign.

Manhattan made one last spurt for the lead at the end of the fourth quarter when Marrano delivered two straight goals, the last coming at the 1:33 mark. Marrano's attempt to tie the contest with just seconds remaining in the game was silenced at the doorstep by freshman goaltender Brent Herbst (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK). Herbst finished the game with 12 saves leading to his second win of the year in net.

The Saints improve to 4-3 overall and remain perfect in the MAAC standing 2-0. Siena returns to action on Tuesday at Hartford. Face-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
