Golf Upperclassmen Retain Hold on Turchi Cup

Oct. 20, 2008

Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena men's and women's golf teams got together Sunday at Shaker Ridge Country Club for the second annual Turchi Cup in honor of friends of Siena Athletics Gino and Willie Turchi. For a second straight season, the event pitted upperclassmen against underclassmen with the upperclassmen retaining the trophy.

The upperclassmen from both the men's and women's teams were coached by Siena men's golf head coach Tom Wronowski and included Gino Turchi and Siena College President Fr. Kevin J. Mullen, O.F.M. The underclassmen squad was coached by Wronowski's son and Siena women's golf coach Dave Wronowski.

Both teams finished the 18-hole competition all square earning 4.5 points each. As a result, the upperclassmen retained the trophy for the second straight season.

The underclassmen had built a commanding 4-1 lead before the upperclassmen roared back to even the score at 4-4. One the final grouping on the 18th hole, Nick Miller, representing the underclassmen squad, forced upperclassmen representative Catherine Shomo to hole a dramatic 12-foot putt to earn the tie and thus retain the trophy for the upperclassmen.

The Siena men's and women's teams return to action this weekend for their final fall competitions in Pennsylvania at two separate Lehigh Invitationals.
