Men's Golfers Second After First Day of Cornell Invitational
Sept. 27, 2008
Dan Abbondandolo fired a first round score of 67 and no Siena golfer shot worse than four over par as the men's golf team ranks second overall following the first day of the Cornell Invitational. Abbondandolo (-5) currently holds a two stroke lead over the next highest competitor in the field. Delaware was the clubhouse leader after the opening round of 18 holes, with a team score of 287. The Saints however, are well within striking distance as they are only one shot off the lead at 288 overall in the 15 team field. Abbondandolo shot an impressive 32 on the back nine to finish with his best round of the fall season. Delaware's Stephen Scialo was the nearest golfer, albeit two shots back of the Saints co-captain entering the final round. Freshman Justin Deitz (-1) joined Abbondandolo as one of two Saints under par after an opening round score of 71. Deitz currently ranks fifth overall. Co-captain James Gifford (75), Don DeNyse III (75) and Nick Miller (76) additionally had impressive rounds and were key factors in Siena's high standing. Originally scheduled for three rounds and 54 holes, the invitational was shortened due to inclement weather in central New York. It was hoped that rounds two and three would be played tomorrow, however Sunday's action will now feature just one round of golf to decide the champion.
