Siena Celebrates Historic Season at Annual Awards Banquet

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena College held its annual men's basketball awards banquet on Monday evening, April 28 at the Albany Marriott on Wolf Road. With FOX sports anchor Rich Becker serving as master of ceremonies, over 400 fans and alumni recognized the successful career of senior Tay Fisher and celebrated the historic 2007-2008 season; highlighted with a MAAC Championship and a first round victory over Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament.

Coaches and administrators, including Siena president Fr. Kevin Mullen and Albany county executive Michael Breslin were in attendance to pay tribute to the lone-senior Tay Fisher as well as the annual award winners.

Athletic Director John D'Argenio presented Fr. James Toal, OFM with the Howard T. Tucker Award for his support and dedication to Siena athletics.

Head coach Fran McCaffery presented all the player awards, beginning with the Newcomer and Hustle Awards. Freshman Ryan Rossiter was presented with the Newcomer Award and sophomore Cory Magee received the Hustle Award for the second consecutive season.

Sophomore Ronald Moore won the Best Playmaker Award. Moore led the team with 5.29 assists per game and had an assist/turnover ratio of 2.43.

The Dan Cuhna Defensive Player of the Year Award was presented to junior Kenny Hasbrouck. Hasbrouck led the league in steals with 2.26 per game.
 

 

Junior Josh Duell won the Jim Sullivan Most Improved Player award. Duell started the last 13 games of the season, giving critical minutes against top-tier centers. He hit the game-winning shots at Marist during the regular season and against Loyola in the semi-finals of the MAAC Tournament.

The Rev. Benjamin Kuhn, OFM Student Athlete Award went to senior Tay Fisher. Fisher hit 44% from three point land, working his way up to 2nd on the school's all-time list. He is graduating with a 3.0 GPA.

The Billy Harrell `52 Rebounder Award was presented to sophomore Alex Franklin for the second consecutive year. Franklin averaged 7.8 rebounds per game.

Rounding out the award winners, sophomore Edwin Ubiles, Franklin and Hasbrouck shared the Doc Marcelle Most Valuable Player Award. The three players were all in the top-7 in the league in scoring.

Ubiles led the team with 17 points per game and shot 53% from the field, 42% from three point range. He was named First Team All-MAAC and a MAAC All-Tournament selection.

Franklin averaged 15.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and led the team in shooting percentage with 57% from the field. He was named Second Team All-MAAC and a MAAC All-Tournament Team selection.

Hasbrouck averaged 16.1 points, 2.2 assists, and started all 34 games this past season. He was a First Team All-MAAC selection and he was named MAAC Tournament MVP. This was Hasbrouck's second Doc Marcelle MVP.
