Siena Fan Takes Aim at $50,000

Feb. 28, 2008

Siena basketball fan Roger Powers will be shooting to net $50,000 when he takes aim from half court on Friday night during the Saints' final regular season home game at the Times Union Center.

Powers was one of 13 fans randomly selected at Siena men's basketball home games during the regular season to participate in the Northeastern Fine Jewelry $50,000 Shooting Stars competition.

Each fan selected had 45 seconds to score as many points as possible from designated areas on the court. Powers racked up 330 points during his shooting session, which earned him a $330 gift card to Northeastern Fine Jewelry.

As the top scorer, Powers earned the opportunity to shoot for the grand prize of $50,000 during the first half of Friday's first-place match up between Siena and Niagara.

Powers will have three chances to shoot from half court.

If he sinks one of three shots, he will receive a $2,500 gift card to Northeastern Fine Jewelry.

If he sinks two of three shots, he will net the grand prize of $50,000.

Just for qualifying for the final round of the contest, Powers has already earned a $1,000 gift card to Northeastern Fine Jewelry.

"Northeastern Fine Jewelry wishes Roger Powers the best of luck and the best of aim in his quest to win $50,000," said Northeastern Fine Jewelry owner Ray Bleser. "We congratulate all of the contestants who took part in this fun and entertaining competition. We would like nothing more than for Roger to take home $50,000 and for Siena to capture a MAAC title championship."

Powers, who resides in Colonie, is currently the eighth grade basketball coach at Saint Gregory's School in Loudonville.

He also played for the College of Saint Rose in the 1990s and is the school's all-time leading scorer with more than 2,000 points.
