Saints Racing toward Finish Line; Rally Past Fairfield for Fifth Straight Win

Feb. 14, 2007

Final Stats

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Siena rallied from a 10-point deficit with 8:43 remaining and made nine straight free throws down the stretch in a crucial 69-64 win at Fairfield Wednesday night. Michael Haddix scored a game-high 19 points and freshman Alex Franklin scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to lead the Saints' charge.

Fairfield used an 11-0 run to take a 50-42 lead with 11:10 to go on a Marty Sullivan jumper. Jonathan Han's jumper at the 8:43 mark pushed the spread to 10 - the largest lead for either team.

Siena then switched to a trapping, full-court press that forced six of the Stags 21 turnovers in the final 7:14.

The Saints made the most of the miscues, scoring 30 points off turnovers.

Franklin scored eight of his points in the last 7:07. He shot 9-12 from the free throw line on the night.

Kenny Hasbrouck's floating fast break lay-up tied the score at 61-61 with 2:04 remaining. After Devin Johnson made the first of two free throws for Fairfield, Franklin made both his opportunities on the other end of the floor to give Siena the lead for good, 63-62, with 1:06 left.

Siena made all eight of its free throws in the final 1:06 and forced two turnovers to seal the outcome. Fairfield made just one field goal in the final 7:35.

Jonathan Han led Fairfield with 15 points. Anthony Johnson added 14 - 12 in the first half. Michale Van Schaick, who torched the Saints for 27 points in a 72-67 Fairfield win in Albany, scored just 10 points - eight in the first four minutes of the second half. He made just 1-4 3-point attempts.

Hasbrouck played through back pains to score 10 points for Siena - eight in the final five minutes.

The Saints shot 51.1% from the field, improving to 9-1 on the season when breaking the 50% mark.

Siena moves to 11-5 in the MAAC with two games remaining. The Saints are a half game past Marist - who they face on National television on February 24 - and tied with Niagara. Siena swept the season series with the Purple Eagles.

The Saints return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. against James Madison at the Times Union Center.
