Siena Knocks off Saint Peter's for Fourth Straight Win
Feb. 11, 2007
JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Michael Haddix scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Siena past Saint Peter's 82-65 in Jersey City Sunday. The Saints used a 15-0 run midway through the second half to put the game away, handing the Peacocks their 17th straight loss. "We are a different team when Michael (Haddix) plays this way - a better team," head coach Fran McCaffery said. "Teams have been playing him differently (the last two weeks). Today he made all the right decisions. What you saw out there was a much more versatile post player. He made great decisions with the basketball and really got after it on the glass." It was the second straight time Siena trailed at the half and won going away. Saint Peter's led by as many as nine points in the first half following Brandon Brock's free throw with 4:39 left. The Peacocks took a 38-36 lead to the locker room. McCaffery implemented a full court press after the break that helped force 11 second half turnovers. The decisive run began with Siena trailing 53-52 with 12:46 to go. Kenny Hasbrouck raced the length of the floor and converted a tear-drop, one-handed runner to give the Saints the lead for good. It sparked a 15-0 run that lasted four minutes and 38 seconds. Following a Haddix jumper with 8:02 left, Siena had a comfortable 67-53 lead. "I felt like the ball fell my way a lot today," Haddix said. "I tried to get things started on the defensive end and then got some offensive rebounds and put backs. It felt good to put up the numbers I'm capable of, but I had never lost my confidence." Hasbrouck finished with 16 points, one shy of freshman Edwin Ubiles' 17. Ubiles had six rebounds two blocks and two steals in his second complete effort in three days. Raul Orta led Saint Peter's with 17 points. His two 3-pointers early in the second half kept Siena at bay. Akeem Gooding added 13 and Tim Spitler had 10.
It was the fourth straight win for Siena which moves to 10-5 in league play. It was also the team's fourth straight game against bottom feeders Iona and Saint Peter's. The Saints return to action at Fairfield on Valentines Day at 7:30 p.m. Following a brief break from MAAC play when they host James Madison Saturday, the Saints close the regular-season with a home game against Manhattan (2/22) and a road game at Marist (2/24). |
