Rider Rolls Past Siena 89-75

Jason Thompson scored 23 points and tied his own school record with 21 rebounds as Rider built a 25-point halftime lead and held on to beat Siena 89-75 in a nationally televised game on ESPN2 Saturday at Times Union Center. The Broncs jumped out to a quick 15-5 lead and led 59-34 at the break, setting a school record for points in the first half of a game. Justin Robinson and Harris Mansell each had 3-pointers in an 11-0 run that pushed the lead from 14 to 25 with 5:08 left. Jason Thompson had a double-double at intermission with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Rider made 62% (24-39) of its field goals and 67% (8-12) of its 3-point attempts. His brother Ryan scored 12 of his 20 points in the first half. Rider scored the first basket of the second half to build its largest lead of the game, before Siena mounted a furious rally, cutting the lead to as few as eight, 79-71, on a Kenny Hasbrouck layup with 4:23 to go. Siena used a 9-0 run to cut the lead from 25 to 16, and a 6-0 spurt trimmed the deficit from 14 to eight. Hasbrouck scored 23 points to lead the Saints. Sophomore Edwin Ubiles chipped in 18 and classmate Alex Franklin added 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Siena shot 58% from the field in the second half and 56% from 3-point range. All five starters reached double figures for Rider. Harris Mansell had 13 points, Justin Robinson had 12 and Mike Ringgold chipped in 10. It was the ninth straight win for Rider - the fourth longest current winning streak in the nation. The Broncs also moved to 10-2 in MAAC play, one and a half games ahead of Siena and Marist. The Saints and Red Foxes play here Monday at 7 p.m.
