Saints Ring in New Year with Fourth Straight Win

Jan. 1, 2009

Final Stats

ALBANY, N.Y. - Edwin Ubiles poured in a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Ronald Moore added a career-high 20 points to go along with his game-high nine assists as the Saints defeated Fairfield 87-81 this afternoon in front of 6,469 fans at Times Union Center. With the win, Siena (9-4, 3-0) claimed sole possession of first place in the MAAC.

Kenny Hasbrouck (17) and Alex Franklin (15) also scored in double figures for Siena which captured its fourth straight win overall and 10th consecutive victory at home. Siena has won seven of eight after losing three times at the Old Spice Classic in late November.

"I can't begin to tell you how proud I am of our team," head coach Fran McCaffery said. "I don't know if anyone truly understands what we went through the last five days."

Siena rallied from 18 down in the second half to win at St. Joseph's Sunday and knocked off Holy Cross on the road Tuesday.

Jonathan Han led Fairfield (8-5, 2-1) with 22 points and seven assists, while Greg Nero contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds. It was the second straight loss for the Stags who had reeled off seven consecutive victories before losing at UConn last week.

Han and Moore orchestrated a phenomenal offensive showcase between the MAAC's top two choices in the Preseason coaches' poll.

The Saints scored 31 baskets on 21 assists and turned the ball over just 10 times. Fairfield had 16 assists and just nine turnovers against Siena's defense which entered the game forcing nearly 19 miscues per game.

Han played through foul trouble the final 10:12 of the game after picking up his fourth foul with Siena up just 63-62. The Saints scored the next five points and trailed by no fewer than four the rest of the way.

Siena carried a 45-40 lead into the locker room after a wild first half with six ties and eight lead changes. The lead could have been more had the Stags not out-scored the Saints 14-7 with Moore on the bench midway through.

"I'm really proud of my guys and the character and composure they have shown with this phenomenally difficult schedule we have put in front of them.

The Saints get two days off before returning to Times Union Center Sunday to face MAAC foe Saint Peter's at 2 p.m.
