Kennedy Silences Siena Bats; Saints Face Elimination Tonight

May 23, 2008

Final Stats

Trenton, N.J. - Junior Jimmer Kennedy pitched into the ninth inning and allowed just two hits as #4 seed Rider topped #3 seed Siena 3-0 in a winners' bracket game at the MAAC Championships Friday afternoon at Waterfront Park. The Saints now face #1 seed Canisius in an elimination game tonight at 7 p.m.

Rider scored twice in the second and once in the third off Siena freshman Zach Hartman, who pitched well but suffered his first loss of the season (8-1).

Hartman tossed seven innings and allowed nine hits and three earned runs, retiring 12 of 13 batters in the middle innings to keep Siena within striking distance.

Siena, however, could not solve Kennedy. The Saints, coming off a 24-run, 26-hit outburst Thursday in an opening round win over Manhattan, managed just three hits. Three times, including the ninth inning, they put a runner on second with no outs, but all three times they failed to score.

The Broncs scored their first run on a wild pitch, and their second on an RBI single by Jamie Hayes. Hayes came on in the ninth to work out of a mild jam and earn his 11th save of the season and second of the Tournament.

The winner of the Siena vs. Canisius game will need to defeat the Broncs twice tomorrow.
