Fairfield Spoils Saints Senior Day with 6-5 Baseball Win

May 19, 2006

Final Stats

Peter Allen singled home two runs with two outs and two strikes in the top of the ninth capping off a three run frame that catapulted Fairfield past Siena 6-5 on Senior Day in Loudonville Friday. Seniors Gabe Perez and Bill Lazio finished their careers in style, combining for five hits and a homerun in their final collegiate appearance.

After Fairfield scored a run in its first at bat, Perez singled and eventually scored on a failed pick off attempt, tying the score, 1-1. Bill Lazio's RBI single chased home classmate Scott King with the go-ahead run moments later.

Fairfield tied the game in the third when Saints' catcher Eric Hildenbrand tried to cut down the trailing runner on a double steal attempt and saw his throw sail into centerfield. Hildenbrand atoned for the error in the bottom half of the frame, scoring the Saints' third run on Nick Messinger's sacrifice fly to left.

Gabe Perez' 11th homerun of the season came with a runner on in the fourth and gave Siena its biggest lead of the game, 5-2. Siena starter Will Hassett battled through control problems to pitch seven effective innings allowing just one earned run and five hits. He did walk six batters and struck out five.

The Stags scored their third run off Hassett in the fifth when pinch hitter Dave Jermine drew a bases loaded walk.

Kevin Snyder relieved Hassett in the eighth, making his sixth appearance in six games played this week. He shut down the Stags in the eighth, and seemed well on his way to doing the same in the ninth. After allowing a one-out single in the ninth, Snyder calmly retired Albie DeSimone on a groundout. Fairfield then strung together three consecutive sharp singles, taking the lead on Allen's clutch safety down 1-2 in the count. Jake Willis singled with two outs in the ninth, but was cut down at second trying to move within scoring range to end the game.

Dan Breen picked up his third victory of the season in relief for Fairfield. Starter Doug Ciallella settled down after an erratic first couple innings keeping the Stags within striking range.

Siena finishes the season 23-31-1 overall and 12-15 in seventh place in the MAAC. Fairfield claimed sixth place in the conference standings with today's win. The Stags were 18-29 this season, 12-14 mark in conference play. The start of the game was delayed over two hours due to rain. The 10-member Siena senior class was honored before the start of the game.
