Baseball Downs Cornell 8-5 for First Win

March 2, 2008

Box Score

Jacob Willis homered twice and freshman Zach Hartman picked up the win with seven solid innings on the hill as the Siena baseball team beat Cornell 8-5 Sunday in Charlottesville, Va. It was the first victory of the season for the Saints.

Siena jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring three times in the first and twice in the second. Moises Rivera scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Anthony Giansanti's sacrifice fly scored the second and Jason DeFilippo knocked home the third with an RBI hit to complete the first inning scoring.

Willis first home run of the game - a two-run shot to left in the second - staked Hartman to a big early lead.

Mickey Brodsky got the Bid Red on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but Siena struck back with two runs on an RBI single by Rivera in the third to take a 7-1 lead.

Cornell scored single runs in the third, fourth, sixth and ninth innings to pull closer. Willis capped off Siena's scoring with his third home run of the weekend in the top of the ninth.

The Saints return to action next weekend for a three-game set at Arkansas.
