May 6, 2008 The Siena athletic department held its annual yearend All-Sports Celebration Tuesday afternoon in front of the Marcelle Athletic Complex in Loudonville. The department presented awards to every athlete completing a year of sport participation and also distinguished excellence in the classroom. Senior Nadiege Honore and junior Kenny Hasbrouck were named Siena Student Athletes of the Year. Head men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery and volleyball coach Garvey Pierre were named Siena College Coaches of the Year Academic advisor Gail Picillo began the awards ceremony by presenting the Student-Athlete Achievement Awards to women's lacrosse senior Lynn Harkins and baseball senior Ryan King. The honor goes to a graduating student-athlete who has worked diligently in the classroom, and shown great improvement. Picillo also presented the "Academic Honor" and Academic Excellence" awards. Graduating seniors carrying a GPA between 3.2 and 3.699 were presented with a fleece Siena blanket, and student-athletes who carry a GPA between 3.7 and 4.0 were honored with a desk clock. Tay Fisher, the men's basketball Student Athlete Advisory Committee representative, presented the annual SAAC Appreciation Award to strength coach Dan Taylor. The award recognizes an individual for their dedication and commitment to Siena's student athletes. As part of a new awards system unveiled three years ago, those student athletes who completed their first year of athletic participation were presented with their varsity letter. Those who completed their second year of athletic participation were presented with a Siena jacket. Those who completed their third year of competition earned a Siena portfolio and duffle bag. Student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility and are on pace to graduate were honored with a Siena watch. Athletic excellence awards were next presented to all MAAC Players and Rookies of the Year, First Team All-MAAC selections and MAAC Tournament Team picks by representatives from Northeastern Fine Jewelry which donated designer watches for each honoree. Associate Athletic Director Joyce Eggleston presented the Siena Coach of the Year Awards to McCaffery and Pierre. Both coaches guided their programs to MAAC Championships and NCAA berths. Assistant athletic director Dennis Bates presented Hasbrouck and Honore with their awards. Hasbrouck was a NABC Second Team All-Region and First Team All-MAAC selection. He was also named MAAC Tournament MVP and Collegeinsiders.com Mid-Major Player of the Year. Hasbrouck scored 30 points in the Saints NCAA First Round win over Vanderbilt. Honore guided the Saints to the MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. She was named MAAC Tournament MVP and finished her career second on the school's all-time kills charts. Assistant athletic director Lori Perillo presented men's soccer freshman Steve Skonieczny and women's swimmer Brittany Pavolko with the Siena Rookie of the Year awards. Skonieczny was a Second team All-MAAC performer who started 18 of 20 games in the net and posted a 1.5 goals against average. He orchestrated three complete game shutouts and was named both MAAC Rookie of the Week and MAAC defensive Player of the Week over the course of the season. Pavolko set an individual pool record in the 200 individual medley and individual Siena records in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Pavolko made history by becoming the first swimmer in Siena history to win MAAC swimmer of the week twice in the same season. |
